Publication Workshop on Technology and East Asian Society

Advanced PhD students and early career scholars (having obtained their PhD in the last five years) in the humanities and social sciences working on topics related to science, technology and society, are invited to apply to participate in the publication workshop entitled “Technology and East Asian Society” to be held at the University of Hong Kong in August 2020. The exact dates will be announced shortly.

Priority will be given to non-native English language speakers who are aiming to publish dissertations and/or academic articles for a global audience.

The workshop will cover the selected participants’ accommodation, lunches and refreshments, and will fully subsidize travel expenses to Hong Kong.

 

Organizer:

Collaborative Research Project “Making Modernity in East Asia: Technologies of Everyday Life, 19th-21st Centuries”, Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, The University of Hong Kong.

 

Programs:

This workshop will take place over a five-day period, Monday through Friday. Senior scholars with extensive publication and journal editorial experiences will mentor the selected participants through the process of preparing journal articles and book manuscripts. The participants will undertake an intensive series of lectures, small group discussions, writing exercises and workshopping to better improve their publication opportunities.

 

Application procedure:

The workshop will accept approximately 7 participants who are: (1) advanced PhD students enrolled in a doctoral program in a recognized university; or (2) early career scholars, who have obtained their PhDs in the last five years.

 

Required documents include:

(i)      A completed application form. The form is available online here.

(ii)     A 3-minute self-introduction video. This may be as simple as a self-recorded video captured with a computer webcam. Please use avi, mp4, mov or wmv format exported and compressed to a maximum of 100 MB.

(iii)    A one-page statement of purpose explaining why you would like to participate in the workshop. Format: Times New Roman Point 12, single-line spacing.

(iv)    A 5-page writing sample in English. Format: Times New Roman Point 12, single-line spacing.

(v)     One letter of recommendation in English. Please ask your referee to send the letter directly to mmea@hku.hk with subject heading “Publication Workshop Reference Letter”

 

Applications should submit item (i), (iii), and (iv) via email to mmea@hku.hk with subject heading “Publication Workshop” For submission of item (ii) the self-introduction video clip, please share with us through cloud service.  The extended deadline of application is 17:00, February 29, 2020 (Hong Kong Time). All the required documents should reach us by the aforesaid deadline. Late applications will not be considered.
